Biography

Monica Crystal Ocegueda is a Mexican-American artist from California’s Central Valley whose work explores identity, culture, family, and both personal and generational trauma. Working primarily in photography and installation, she challenges traditional notions of photography by transforming images into immersive, multidimensional experiences. Her practice is deeply influenced by her lived experiences as a Mexican-American woman navigating themes of belonging, displacement, and healing. Through symbolic imagery, color, and experimental techniques, Ocegueda examines the tensions between personal history and cultural inheritance, creating emotionally charged works that invite reflection on self-perception and memory. Her art serves as both an expression of grief and a means of empowerment, using visual storytelling as a way to process pain, reclaim identity, and foster resilience. By pushing the boundaries of storytelling and visual representation, Ocegueda continues to develop projects that not only serve as a tool for her own healing but also aim to inspire others to confront their own experiences with strength and self-compassion.
